5 /5 Ariel W.: The First Christian Church of Ft Lauderdale was started by Maude Bollinger and Ruth Repp who offered Sunday school classes on Repps front porch to the Ft Lauderdale community which was only 143 people at that time. Church services were held at several locations in Ft. Lauderdale including the old Fort Lauderdale Sentinel building.
In 1925, a benefactor donated land for a church at the corner of Southeast 13th Street and Southeast Third Avenue on the site of a former rock pit. Lumber to build the church arrived on Sept. 16, 1926. The very next day the Hurricane of 1926 destroyed the church records, lumber, the tent they were working out of, and all of their equipment. Two children and two adult members of the congregation lost their lives. The church rose from this devastating loss and completed the church building in 1927. A later expanded building incorporates the original church structure.
I love a historic church and I was able to check out First Christian Church of Ft Lauderdale during a tag sale. They held the sale in their basement! I was amazed that there was a building with an actual basement in South Florida. The congregation was so warm and welcoming and I got invited to church service by Katherine. This church is gorgeous and you can feel the history within its walls. Church services are held every Sunday at 10:45.
