Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge - Chiefland Susan Strickland: Went on weekend, office closed. Trails were easily hiked. Well maintained. Boardwalk closed due to hurricane damage. Were I visiting in the spring or summer I would have insect repellent, and a hat.
Veterans Memorial Railroad (ORG) - Bristol Amber Powell: They’ve put new playground equipment in and my daughter loves it. Nice enclosed playground safe for all ages. Plenty of sitting spots for parents too!
The Nature Conservancy Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve (Garden of Eden trail) - Bristol Michael Mccollam: Went here on a whim, and I am sure glad I did. Very challenging hike, very pretty too. Well maintained as well. Be sure to do the River Loop. Great views.
Torreya State Park - Bristol Dave Witt: Really cool and interesting state park. The location is extremely unique especially for the state of Florida. It’s up on a 150 foot bluff with a great view of the adjacent Apalachicola river. There’s an easily accessible hiking trail maybe two miles at most in length, that’s shady and a little bit wet in spots. You can get down close to the river and you can access it from the viewpoint behind the old Gregory home. That’s located at the very end of the park. So I would just drive straight back to there and start working your way towards the front. There is a loop trail around the outside of the park. I didn’t do that and the campsites I couldn’t check out because they were destroyed last year in one of the hurricanes. Hopefully they’ll be repaired soon and open, this looks like a great place for a long weekend. So I just made a day trip out of it lots of cool plants and views. I highly recommend it. I’ve read somewhere that it’s great to visit in the fall when the leaves change color, because of Its overall height and vantage point it’s more like being up north than anywhere else in Florida. So hopefully I can get back an update this in the coming fall later this year.
Ladell Brothers Outdoor Environmental Center - Madison Jon O: Go here every year to watch my daughter dance
Four Freedoms Park - Madison Heather H.: Magical little park with so much history. If only the Mossy Oaks could talk. Beautiful park.
Treasures of Madison County Museum - Madison Bobby Irish: Not my idea of an antique shop . No variety,
Riverwalk - Bradenton Mike Morris: A relaxing stroll along the river, walk it fast, or take your bike for a ride. Its picturesque and usually a breeze off the water to cool it down a little. Several restaurants along the way too and Oak & Stone has a rooftop seating area overlooking the river. If youre lucky you might even see the Mayor down there. Hi Gene! Always a good stop at the Riverwalk.
Neal Preserve - Bradenton Nicole Petree: -No Dogs Allowed A bit underwhelming especially considering the amazing nearby preserves available. We had never been and decided to see what it had because we frequent other natural preserves near us. We probably wont go back.. its very small and having the noise from Manatee ave traffic doesnt allow for you to feel like your in nature. It has sand/shell trails and some boardwalk as well. The boardwalk areas definitely need work as we saw(and nearly missed) several holes and chunks missing from the wooden planks. You can tell that this place has not been cared for in a very long time. Its sad to see a preserve like this. Most of the signs showing specific trees or plants didnt actually have those trees or plants there to view which is not typical of a preserve. After all thats why they have the signage.. Overall as local lifetime floridians we were very disappointed in the lack of care and size of this location. I can only hope that the future shows something more for the area.
Palma Sola Botanical Park - Bradenton Kelli Burdine: Its a few nature park that takes donations. It said there was a cafe onsite that we would have liked to check out but our dog was too hot to spend more than 45 minutes here. Idk if I was supposed to take it but I found this really randomly beautiful piece of art in the notch of a tree. It is the most awesome thing Ive ever found. I should try a Google image search to try to find the artist...
