1 /5 Helena B: Dr. Decker ordered a specific test(lumbar puncture) for me that comes with very high risks for people with my condition (hEDS.) The test was to measure a specific hormone in my CSF. She added additional tests for the lumbar puncture as well, but the chief reason I wanted and agreed to the puncture was for the hormone measure.
I was assured while scheduling the test(for early December) that I would be sedated due to anxiety/panic around the test. When I arrived, the staff was confused and said that sedation was never ordered. I had to beg for IV sedation that barely worked and then underwent the extremely painful puncture.
After the test I asked staff if the hormone test was ordered and the staff said they never received it. I asked that they call Dr. Decker to confirm it, and they did. They told me that it was ordered and that the results would take a while to arrive to me.
I’ve called Dr. Decker’s office periodically to check the status and each time have been told that it takes a while to process and to remain patient.
Today, Dr. Decker called and apologized and said that she hadn’t ordered it correctly so the hormone was never measured, despite the months of her staff telling me otherwise. She then said she was uncomfortable re-ordering it and to see a different specialist (she didn’t provide a referral.)
I provided consent to the lumbar puncture because of the hormone testing. I would not have agreed otherwise. The test is risky, and it was extremely emotionally taxing. And now I have to find a different specialist, wait months to see them, request the test again, undergo it again, open myself to the risks again, potentially have another pain attack during the test again, and pay for the specialist visits, the sedation, and the testing again. This is thousands upon thousands of dollars.
I don’t know what is up with Baptist but you can see from my other review that this is not the only issue I’ve had with staff there. In my opinion, there is a culture of disrespect and dishonesty directed at patients by Baptist staff.
