Historic Matheson House - Gainesville Robert Jones: You must call ahead in order to get a museum staff member to give you (or your group) a tour of this historic home.
Possum Creek Park - Gainesville Neil Greishaw: Great park for the local skating community. Theres secrets in the woods here, too. My last visit was to relocate a banded water snake into a creek from a nearby neighborhood. Get out and enjoy some nature!
Florida Museum of Natural History - Gainesville milmarie rosario: This is a great free museum with so much to do! I had so much fun, and my kids enjoyed every part of it. There’s something for everyone — we’ll definitely be back! The hands-on exhibits kept my kids entertained for hours, and I loved how educational and interactive everything was. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the whole place was clean, well-organized, and easy to explore. It’s the perfect spot for a family outing — fun, engaging, and totally free. Highly recommend for anyone with young kids looking for a day of learning and play
Sweetwater Park - Gainesville Brett Stakelin: A lovely, quiet spot to walk, run, or play.
Palm Point Park - Gainesville Kevin Reid: Nice park on Newnans lake. Quite shaded with lots of wildlife and a walking trail. Good places to fish from the bank. Bring bug spray
Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park - Micanopy Nicole B: This is a great park if you want to get some hiking in while keeping an eye out for wildlife! We spent 5-6 hours through out the park at several different entrances/locations. We hiked multiple trails including the la chua (alligators), bolen bluff (bison), observation tower (bison), and half of cones dike trail. We also stopped at the eco passage observation boardwalk and saw 12+ wild horses using our binoculars. Make sure to take a paid of binoculars as you will want them for a better chance of seeing wildlife if they dont happen to be up close.
Sweetwater Preserve - Gainesville Robert Law: Nice little suburban trails along a creek and up and down a hill. You could almost think youre out in the country. The trails are numbered, but the map is on the back of the notice board so we just meandered around the preserve for a while. I found the map on the way out.
Squirrel Ridge Park - Gainesville Raegan Simpson: It was a great park to play kickball. I didnt use the playground, yet there was one. I dont recall using the restrooms. Spent a couple hours with 50 of my closest friends having a kickball tourney and eating lunch. Several benches to sit at and ample parking.
Jacobitz Winter Wonderland - Gainesville Kelly Jacobitz: This is our house.. we are up and running! Please realize that we cannot keep it running when it rains. It has to dry out before we can get it working again! Please remember this is a family project. Not a business. Merry Christmas!
Cofrin Nature Park - Gainesville Flabeano Castro: Good park, but needs maintenance. Good trails and playground, but there is a metal rebar in the middle of the trail and a wasp nest in the playground.
