5 /5 Vernon Schmidt: As someone who has struggled with dental phobia for years, and now spent some time travelling and trying many other dentists, I can say that Dr Sheth has been most important to my dental health.
From the very first visit, Dr. Sheth took the time to listen to my concerns, explain procedures in a way that felt reassuring, and work with me to make appointments less stressful. I feel like we are both interested in my journey through the phobia, unlike the others who were about tolerating it. Most dentists didn’t listen to me well at all. I’m not even sure that the practices would allow them to. It’s different working with an individual dentist than as part of a chain.
While I still carry some trace of my dental phobia after many years, I’ve learned a variety of techniques that help manage my fear and make each visit more manageable. I can’t say that I’m unafraid of the needle (it’s still tough), but I’ve discovered many things that help me focus and lower the fear. The amount of fear I feel can vary—sometimes I’m less anxious, and other times more—but I’ve gotten better at managing it over time.
The progress seems to have moved me past the fear of the drill at all. I still have some unconscious reactions and difficulty relaxing at times, but the last few years the worse of the anxiety has been disappearing when the needle is in my mouth. I’m sure I’ve more control over it. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that Dr. Sheth has always been there for me, supporting me and staying interested in my journey. Most of this recommendation is actually hs idea to use what I learned to help others facing anxiety and phobia at the dentist. Unlike other dentists I’ve been to, who would push me through appointments without understanding my phobia, Dr. Sheth has felt like he was on my team instead of just putting up with me.
If you struggle with dental anxiety, I encourage you to give these strategies a try and also to find a compassionate dentist like Dr. Sheth, who’s truly willing to work with you, not just push you through.
