1 /5 Jeff L: VERY disappointed with Winter Haven Hospitalās Handling of My Fatherās Care
Our family had a heartbreaking experience with Winter Haven Hospital when my father, who had dementia, was brought in under a Baker Act(for health) by the Polk County Sheriffās Office on Thanksgiving Day. His caregiver, who lived nearby, could no longer care for him, and the hospital was legally unable to release him without placing him in a long-term facility.
Just before Christmas, we were informed that he would be transferred to a long term care facility in Lake Wales. However, after days of silence, we received a shocking call from a doctor who vaguely mentioned that they "think" he aspirated but werenāt sure. Suddenly, the conversation shifted from long term care to "comfort care". Around the same time, we started receiving insurance denial letters, leading us to believe that his long-term placement had been rejected. It seems like, instead of finding a solution, the hospital did what was most convenient for them.
We spoke to an employee there that told us that people come in the hospital, theyre walkkng, talking and joking around and the next thing they know they start talking about comfort care.
All I know is this hospital was way too eager to put him on "comfort care" and get him out of there. What I witnessed was not comfort, he suffered before he died.
Communication was poor, and the lack of transparency left our family feeling helpless and betrayed. If a patient cannot be legally discharged, they should still receive proper care, not be left in limbo while families struggle to get answers. This experience was devastating, and I would caution others about trusting their loved ones to this facility.
